ADPSR NORCAL EVENTS
ADPSR Monthly Presentation
The Science of Building Green:
Materials, Energy, and Health
March 16, 2010, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
AIA San Francisco 130 Sutter Street, 6th Floor $10 donation, no one turned away for lack of funds
Co-Sponsored by the Ecological Building Network (www.ecobuildnetwork.org)
Architects, Designers, and Builders face an enormous array of decisions. Yet most of these are based on incomplete information about the physics that will actually happen to the building. On March 16 join a panel of experts for a presentation and in-depth discussion of what is really going on in our buildings – how energy flows, how buildings fail (and how to avoid that), and how they can contribute or injure human well-being and the health of our environment.
The discussion will be led by John F. Straube, Ph.D., P.Eng. John is a specialist building science engineer who has been deeply involved in the areas of building enclosure design, moisture physics, and whole building performance as a consultant, researcher, and educator. Other panelists include Bruce King, Ecological Building Network, and others to be determined

FURTHER THINKING
The World Beyond the Megaton
by Oscar Eggers
There is a world beyond the megaton
The intermittent rising rage
The anxious tear-washed peace that
sees no understanding beyond the
dream of understanding of yesterday
The stoic stance of statues bearing
spheres beyond the stars of chance
the matter power of orbit flight
and missile might
Beyond the world that made us
strongly weak and weakly strong
Beyond, but soon to touch our
fingertip and then our grasp
And in that grasp the clasp of faith
each in himself and theirs the other
As I am I of you and you are you of me
There is a world beyond
What may we yet together build?
What may we yet together be?
Upon some newer truths as yet unmade
Perhaps infinity.

SB375 & Transit Oriented Development

Taught by Courtney Miller, ADPSR’s chair of the 2008/ 2009 Building Ecology Lecture Series
Introduction to California’s new regional planning law SB 375 (established by AB32 – now under threat by a ballot measure aiming to repeal it) that attempts to fight global warming by reshaping communities around walkable transit-oriented neighborhoods. Learn how to use the elements of urban design to reduce mobile source emissions (cars and light trucks) with new techniques in regional planning that engage the public in alternative growth strategies. Study existing transit-oriented projects that are already making a difference reducing California’s overwhelming reliance on four-wheelers.
6 meetings
March 11 to April 15: Thurs., 6:30-9:30 pm
San Francisco: Room 205, Art and Design Center, 95 Third St.

Bringing Feng Shui Magic into YOUR Home:
Practical Application Seminar
With Richard Feather Anderson, Feng Shui Master
5 Tuesday evenings, 7:15 to 9:30 p. m.
From March 2 to 30
In and around Santa Rosa
Not sure if life-supporting chi is leaking out of, or being drained away from, your home? Worried you may have a “missing wealth corner”? Got a room that doesn’t feel good, and you don’t know why? Can’t afford a private consultation? Here’s a solution!
Join this series of practical application sessions! We will visit most of the participants’ homes, and analyze others from floor plans and photos, to address these and other common concerns. Richard will guide you through his unique multi-disciplinary process so you can learn how to spot dysfunctional arrangements and compromised circulation paths, and invent simple, inexpensive, customized remedies that are in harmony with your personal aesthetics.
Through this process of evaluating your own and others’ spaces you will come to understand feng shui as a set of common-sense principles of good design, based on the laws of Nature. Specifically, you will increase your awareness of how your environment affects you physically, psychologically and spiritually; understand how enhancing everyone’s experience of entering your home can bring more supportive energy into your life; realize how to utilize the energetic dynamics of the Ba Gua cosmogram to weave your activity areas into a single medicine wheel; and experience how astute re-arrangements help you get more accomplished.
Join us and be inspired to transform your home into a sanctuary that better serves your daily needs, supports you life goals, and feeds your soul.
Richard Feather Anderson, B. Sc. Architecture, has been designated a feng shui master by Feng Shui Institute International. He is the founder of the American School of Geomancy, and one of the longest practicing geomancers in America, with over thirty-five years experience. He gives clear explanations of ancient wisdom and makes learning fun.
Cost: $40 each evening, or $175 discounted rate, if received by Feb. 27.

News and Information
Green building trends for Almanac--Tight deadline!
For our Tastes & Trends section in our 2011 edition, we're reporting on the three items, below. I'm interested in any details you can share about any of these developments. I can be reached at StaceyKusterbeck@aol.com or at (631) 425 9760.
-Stacey Kusterbeck/The Old Farmer's Almanac
1) houses whose exterior surface turns dark on sunny days to stay cooler, and clear on dark days to absorb light and heat. Are you aware of this technology? I'm wondering what the house would be made of, and whether it would be clear or mirrored "siding."
2) heat pump exchange systems that bring into the house heat from the
ground during winter and coolness during summer. Are you aware of this type of heating system? I'm not clear on how it would differ from geothermal heat pumps, or if it is the same thing.
3) concrete used to reduce air pollution from traffic. Do you know if this
concrete is being used to build homes, sidewalks, or concrete walls along highways? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Violators of Alameda County Landfill Ban to Face Fines
Landscapers Must “Keep Plant Debris Garbage-Free”
In an effort to meet its voter mandate to divert 75 percent of all waste from landfill by the end of 2010, Alameda County has recently enacted a new law that prohibits the disposal of plant debris in landfills. Those in violation of the ordinance will be subject to citations and fines starting on January 1, 2010.

EMPLOYMENT
Natural Building Positions Sought
I am writing in regards to jobs or employment you may have or may know of in
the Bay area. I found your contact on the Natural Building Network website. I recently moved to the Bay area with the inclination of trying to get involved in the natural building sector. My work experience in terms of sustainability, farming, and building is quite varied. I am looking to expand upon my experience and knowledge with the ability to work with like-minded and motivated individuals. Any advice or possible leads to jobs would be much appreciated. I thank you for your time and knowledge if you are willing to dispense. Michael Bartelloni
*NEEDED: residential mechanical engineers*
Those of us working on high-performance home projects often need good, experienced, green- and energy-savvy mechanical engineers. Unfortunately, most of them (you) work exclusively on non-residential projects. If you are such a person or have direct knowledge of such a person, please send me contact information and, if you are so inclined, a few words saying what you know about this person. I would be hugely grateful -- and willing to share the list I compile.
Thanks!
