Beyond Zuccotti Park publishing project
New Village Press OWS book
We believe that freedom to assemble in public space is fundamental to our democracy (see ADPSR's statement in support of OWS). New Village Press, the publishing division of ADPSR, is excited to have published a book on this subject—Beyond Zuccotti Park: Freedom of Assembly and the Occupation of Public Spaces.ISBN: 978-1-61332-009-9
Ron Shiffman, Rick Bell, Lance Jay Brown, and Lynne Elizabeth are the editors of this informative collection of original essays and visuals by two dozen leading planners, architects, civil liberties experts, and social scientists, who include Peter Marcuse, Michael Sorkin, Michael Pyatok, and ADPSR board member, Jeff Hou, author of Insurgent Public Space.
Securing the right to assemble publicly in cities is essential to citizen's ability to effect social change. Beyond Zuccotti Park is part of a larger national initiative—Democracy, Equity and the Public Realm. We are seeking financial support for this work and are exceedingly grateful for donations made here. A complimentary copy of the book will be gifted to all donors.
Beyond Zuccotti Park is a collaborative effort of the Center for Architecture, City College of New York School of Architecture, and Pratt Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment, working together with New Village Press and ADPSR. The project was sparked by a series of free public forums, Freedom of Assembly: Public Space Today, held at the Center for Architecture in New York in response to the clearance of Occupy activities from public plazas throughout the country. The recorded programs can be heard at these sites: December 17, 2011 and February 4, 2012 .
